3. The MOSE Flood Protection Barrier
The MOSE System (Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico) represents one of the world's most advanced hydraulic engineering projects. It consists of 78 mobile floodgates deployed across the three lagoon inlets (Lido, Malamocco, and Chioggia).
When high tides are forecast to exceed +110 cm above baseline, compressed air is pumped into the submerged steel gates, displacing water and causing them to rise in under 30 minutes, completely sealing the Venetian Lagoon from Adriatic storm surges.
